Choosing the Right Lighting for Every Room
How to layer ambient, task and accent lighting for each room — plus warm vs cool white explained.
Start with the room, not the fitting
Before choosing a light, think about what the room is for. Different activities need different layers of light:
- Ambient light — the general brightness of the room, usually a ceiling fitting or downlights.
- Task light — focused light for reading, cooking or working, like a desk lamp or kitchen pendants.
- Accent light — highlights features, art or architecture, like wall lights or garden spotlights.
A quick guide by room
- Lounge: a statement pendant or chandelier for ambience, plus floor or table lamps for cosy evenings.
- Kitchen: bright, cooler task lighting over work surfaces — pendants over an island work beautifully.
- Bedroom: warm, dimmable lighting. Bedside wall lights free up your side tables.
- Bathroom: moisture-rated fittings (IP44 or higher) around the mirror for a clear reflection.
- Outdoor & garden: weather-rated wall and garden lights to make entrances safe and welcoming.
Warm or cool?
- Warm white (±3000K) feels relaxed — best for living spaces and bedrooms.
- Cool white / daylight (4000K+) feels crisp and alert — best for kitchens, bathrooms and work areas.
