Lumens vs watts vs Kelvin — how to read lighting specs and choose the right brightness.
Lumens measure brightness — watts measure power
The old habit of shopping by wattage doesn't work with modern LED lights. Two LEDs with the same wattage can be totally different brightnesses.
Lumens (lm) = how bright the light is. That's the number to look for.
Rough brightness guide
- 200–400 lm — bedside lamp, subtle accent light
- 800–1100 lm — standard room bulb / ceiling fitting
- 1500+ lm — large rooms, garages, outdoor areas
Colour temperature
Look for the Kelvin (K) rating on the product:
- 2700K–3000K — warm white, cosy and relaxed
- 4000K–5000K — cool white / daylight, crisp and practical
Some fittings are dimmable — check the product specifications, and make sure your dimmer switch is LED-compatible.
If a light stops working
- Check the bulb or LED driver — replace if the fitting allows it.
- Check the wall switch and any dimmer setting.
- If the fitting itself is faulty and within warranty, contact support with your order number and photos.
